a new year of contra dance! [Jan. 17th, 2007|09:24 pm]
Queer contra dancers in the San Francisco area

What: Queer Contra Dance
When: Saturday, January 20, 7:30-10:30 p.m. (Basic moves taught at 7:30.)
Who: Karen Fontana calls, music by The Fiddlerats (Caroline McCaskey, fiddle; Cole Ingraham, flute & djembe; Terrell Liedstrand, mandolin & guitar)
Where: Bethany Church, 1268 Sanchez Street (at Clipper) in San Francisco map
How much: $10 (or pay what you can)

It's tropical theme night at Queer Contra, so take it from Carmen Miranda: Let's brighten dark, dank January with a splash of color on Saturday: wear your fruitiest shirt, your grassiest skirt or your loudest muu muu! Caller Karen Fontana transplants her palm trees into Bethany (no kidding!), while The Fiddlerats don Hawaiian shirts and jam in glorious Technicolor. However, wardrobe decisions are totally your own (no one turned away for lack of pigment), but do bring your sunniest personality and prepare for fun.

Half-time entertainment takes us to cooler climes with the stately art of English longsword dance. Ring of Cold Steel will be our special guest and features nifty geometric choreography and Houdini-like maneuvers!

Beginners are, as always, welcome (Contra dance?? What's that?? An exuberant, easy-to-learn barndance done to live old-timey music, with no partner or special attire required!), so tell your friends, and take a tip from Carmen's millinery for what to bring to the refreshment table -- Robert is busy cracking the code for Hawaiian Punch and will fill the bowl with seven natural fruit juices.

Contra está a dança da vida! Carmen's classic number. (Paging Dr. Freud!)

AND get ready for February! Sunday, February 4, 5:30-7:00 p.m., Erik Hoffman leads an Intro to Contra Dance Workshop at San Francisco's two-stepping Sundance Saloon. (Scroll down to the bottom of our calendar page for details. Then on Sunday, February 17, at Oakland's Humanist Hall, there's a double-header (with dinner in the middle) lead by Boston caller Chris Ricciotti . . . Experienced Contra Dance: 3:00-5:30 p.m. (if you've been to our dances and feel like you have the hang of it, you'll do fine); Potluck dinner: 6:00-7:15 p.m. (bring something to share); Contra Dance: 7:30-10:30 p.m. (our usual fun-filled evening -- everyone's welcome!).

Feel like celebrating? Join Queer Contra this month as we bounce back to the East Bay where you'll find us swinging in Oakland's spacious Humanist Hall. There's room for everyone (and ample parking . . . and 19th Street BART not too far away). Our favorite redhead (Mavis!) is back calling to the pulsating strings of Ray, Maxine & Alan. Please help fill the refreshment table AND the hall: tell your friends new dancers are always welcome -- Mavis does the basics at 7:30.

Peace, joy and love from Queer Contra Dance!

HALLOWEEN DANCE this SATURDAY! [Oct. 15th, 2006|10:59 pm]

What: Queer Contra Halloween Dance
When: Saturday, October 21, 7:30-10:30 p.m. (Teaching in the first 30
Who: Lynn Ackerson calls, music by Karen Heil (fiddle) and Maxine Gerber &
Brendan Doyle (switch-hitting banjo & guitar)
Where: Bethany Church, 1268 Sanchez Street (at Clipper) in San Francisco

All Hallows' Eve approaches. Pixies, fays and sprites come out to dance
with gnomes and ghouls in fairy rings as glowworms light their fecund
revels! And from that dark, unearthly mayhem, the fervid contra calls of
Lynn Ackerson echo forth . . . hey, wait a minute . . . that's coming from
Bethany Church this Saturday when Queer Contra hosts its own Halloween bash
with the Divine Ms. A conjuring contra dances to Karen Heil and her
all-string band!

Appease any vengeful pixie or gnome with offerings for the refreshment table
(from the organic to the sugar-infested), the wearing of costumes and the
recruiting of new followers to the sacred rites of contra dance. As an
added treat, the special effects department is cooking up some spooky sights
and sounds. Bwahahahahaaaa!

Did you pass on Ascot this year? And the Henley Royal Regatta? Forgoing
Las Madrinas Debutante Ball? Can't bear the Metropolitan opening, yet
again? If the thought of another ordinaire social season leaves you sinking
in ennui, the cure is just days away . . .

This Sunday, the Opening Night Gala of the Queer Contra Dance begins another
dazzling gender-free contra season with a special dance at Ashkenaz,
Berkeley's venerable home for the world music and dance scene. Mavis
McGaugh, la grande dame de contre (and personal dance coach to Mrs. Astor,
we hear), presides over the festivities, accompanied by les très fabuleux
music-makers Band du Jour. Special halftime dancing entertainment is served
up by the delirious Berkeley Morris, who'll be ringing bells, waving hankies
and/or whacking sticks.

Ashkenaz has its own refreshment bar, so please save your canapés and petits
fours for October. Dress up, dress down, or anything in-between. (Sources
say Anna Wintour will hoof it in her Armani tank top.) There's something for
everyone, and everyone is welcome!

More info? Robert at sfcontra at hotmail dot com.

And why not forward this on to friends in your social register? Queer
Contra does gender-free (dance with whoever ya want), but here's a clip (of
a gendered dance somewhere) to give you an idea about contra:
