Down with commercialized, faux "holiday festivity"! Up with RAUCOUS BARN
DANCING!

What? A special Sunday Evening Queer Contra Dance

Who? The Groovemongers, two women and one man who are widely considered
to be one of the most talented and electrifying contra bands in the
nation. Many consider their CD "Fresh Wares" to be the finest contra
recording ever made. And Erik Hoffman, the "gold standard" for calling
simple, fun dances, will teach and call.

When? Sunday, December 9, from 6-9 p.m. (note the early start time).

Where? Humanist Hall, 390 27th St (between Broadway and Telegraph),
Oakland. The 19th St. BART stop is about seven blocks away.

Why? Because, like Moving Violations who we had last March, this band has
the power to transport us to a state of Dionysian ecstasy!

How Much? $10 or pay what you can.

Say "NO!" to pretentious chatter, blasting music, noxious cologne, inane personalities and other trappings of Saturday night hell realms. Say "YES!" to friendly people, holding hands, laughter, fiddles, pianos and dancing home on a cloud. That's what Queer Contra's for.

Please help fill the refreshment table with edibles. And do tell your friends about us.

QUEER CONTRA DANCE in BERKELEY on SUN, OCT 21! [Oct. 15th, 2007|01:55 pm]
Queer contra dancers in the San Francisco area

When: Sunday, October 21, 6:00-9:00 p.m. (**note the earlier time**)
Who: Frederick Park calls, music by 3 O’Clock Shadow
Where: Ashkenaz, 1317 San Pablo Avenue (near Gilman) in Berkeley
Map & Directions: http://www.ashkenaz.com/html/map.html
How much: $10 (or pay what you can)

This month, we’re back at Ashkenaz – the funky, eclectic center of music and dance in Berkeley – where history is on the walls (literally!) and a bit of psychedelia is in the air. And further proving that contra dance attracts the most interesting and erudite, caller-philosopher Frederick Park (with added reputation of master storyteller) will be here from North Carolina to get us moving to 3 O’Clock Shadow, one of the best bands around and featuring our pal Erik Hoffman fiddling away. Or just come for the food – Ashkenaz has a famously scrumptious snack bar!

PARKING ALERT! If you’re not finding anything on the street, try these parking garages: Mission/Bartlett Garage, 3255 - 21st Street (between Valencia and Mission) and 16th St/Hoff Garage, 16th & Hoff (just above 16th Street BART).

Oh, there’s so much to celebrate! We’re turning 3 and Queen Elizabeth II is turning 81. Put those two events together and not just an ordinary celebration is to be had. The effervescent Dean Allemang flies up from L.A. to call with those rollicking music-makers The Roadoilers -- so prepare for high-energy partying! Dean, you may remember, called our February dances, and we’re happy to welcome him back.

Mark Galipeau has obtained royal approval for decorating, and he’ll transform the auditorium into a festive homage to Her Majesty. Bring your decorous self (in costume, tuxedo, tiara, crinoline, cummerbund . . . whatever says “Happy Anniversary!”) or just come as you are. Please remember something for the refreshment table, and bring your contra-curious friends. Beginners are . . . (everyone together, now) ALWAYS WELCOME! But what, pray tell, is contra dance? Let’s look it up . . .

con-tra dance |käntr dans| noun: An exuberant, easy-to-learn barndance done to live old-time music. No partner or special attire is required. Sought out by friendly people for centuries. VARIATION: queer con-tra dance: Dance with whomever you want!

Thursday?? We want you to come out on a Thursday??? Yes...for an evening you WON'T forget. Direct from the nation's contra dance Mecca of Greenfield, Massachusetts, it doesn't get any better than Linda Leslie and The Moving Violations! Linda's crackerjack teaching and resonant voice have inspired legions of contra dancers (and contra callers) and The MV's dynamic, joyful music is consistently mesmerizing and will send you reeling into contra orgasm! La Leslie and band are the featured talent at Harbin Hot Springs' dance camp next weekend, so experience them HERE and NOW at Humanist Hall while you can.

Tell your contra-deprived friends what they're missing: Contra dance?? Why, it's an exuberant, easy-to-learn barndance done to live Celtic-infused music, with no partner or special attire required. Are beginners welcome?? You bet your boots, they are!

Please help fill the refreshment table with fruit, veggies, cookies, peanuts, chocolate...whatever you're hungry for.

AND for you soon-to-become Linda/Violations groupies, get more of the same at the NBCDS San Rafael Contra Dance on Sunday, April 8, 7:30-10:30 p.m., at Marin Masonic Hall, Lootens between 4th and 5th in San Rafael. $10 members/$12 general. And tell Reta that Queer Contra sent ya.

Happy Easter!
